new&- reIeabe L.AIII toTevv5_ t•telea
ECGENEE
C
February 20, 2002
CONTACT: John Moriarty, Forest Management Plan Coordinator, 682-5324
From Public Information Section, 682-2739
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
VOLUNTEER WORK PARTY AT HENDRICKS PARK TO TACKLE STORM DAMAGE
Hendricks Park is scheduling a volunteer work party this Saturday, February
23rd in response to offers from park patrons to help clean up damage generated from
last week's wind storm. Volunteers will meet at the F.M Wilkins Picnic Shelter on
Summit Avenue at 9:30 am.
More than 20 trees were toppled or broken during the high winds, and about 35
rhododendrons were uprooted or broken by falling trees and limbs. A picnic table, park
entry sign and lamp post were severely damaged in the storm. Park staff and other city
crews have already cleared the heaviest debris, but considerable clean up remains.
Last weekend volunteers removed ivy from forested areas of the park in the last
of the "Gaining Ground" ivy pulling days of the winter. According to Michael Robert,
Head Gardener at Hendricks Park, it was important to maintain the focus on ivy
clearing, rather than shift that attention to storm clean up. "The Forest Management
Plan prioritizes invasive plant removal," said Robert, "and we really wanted to do as
much as we could before the native bulbs and perennials begin to emerge in the
coming weeks. Now we can focus volunteer efforts on storm clean up."
This Saturday's volunteer party will work until 1:00 pm, rain or shine. Volunteers
should bring rain gear, gloves and sturdy boots. The City will provide all necessary
hand tools, snacks and water.
###
L,
Public Works•Administration•City of Eugene•858 Pearl Street•Eugene,OR 97401
Phone: (541)682-5262•FAX: (541)682-6826• www.ci.eugene.or.us
