SHELDON HIGH SCHOOL
TRAFFIC /PARKING IMPROVEMENTS
In addition to the Community Workshop, City and School District staff attended several Cal Young
Neighborhood Organization meetings to discuss ongoing traffic and parking issues associated with the
current activities at the High School and Community Center, and to identify neighborhood impacts that
may be associated with future development.
In response to neighborhood concerns, several programs and policies have been recently implemented by 4j
School District to address school - related parking and traffic impacts. Additional strategies were proposed that
could be implemented immediately, by either the City of Eugene or 4j School District, to further reduce
school - related parking and traffic impacts to Sheldon High School neighbors:
• Increasing event staffing to provide traffic and parking control during high -use periods;
• Creating and distributing a Kidsports "Field Guide" for parents and children;.
• Facilitating a car pool match program through LTD to target Meadowlark alternative elementary
school commuters; and
• Reducing uncontrolled student parking by constructing a fence along high school's western boundary
to discourage event parking in the neighborhood west of the campus.
The City and School District will continue to review the feasibility of additional programs, policies, and
facility improvements to address neighborhood traffic impacts. Some of these may be incorporated into the
development of the multi -use athletic field /Youth Sports Park project. Future improvements that may be
considered include:
• Encouraging the use of alternative transportation modes, especially bicycles;
• Improving on -site signage relating to access and parking for park and school facilities;
• Using low glare uni- directional lights for the multi -use synthetic surface athletic field; and
• Providing additional parking on campus through parking management for events.
D:\ANDREA \YSP \Yspais3.wpd
