, <br /> Workshop Report/Findings: SHELDON <br /> Date: Saturday, May 22nd <br /> Time: 8:30 am until 12 noon <br /> Participants: Approximately 70 <br /> Desired Benefits <br /> • Contribute to comprehensive education program for youth, including recreation education; <br /> • Provide social opportunities for youth; <br /> • Contribute to community pride; <br /> • Enhance public safety; <br /> • Promote overall community livability; <br /> • Provide open space for passive recreation uses; <br /> • Provide diverse community and individual recreation activities; and <br /> • Provide a range of opportunities for personal growth. <br /> Preferred Recreation Facilities <br /> • Improve existing facilities to enhance playability, such as drainage and irrigation for softball and <br /> soccer fields; <br /> • Develop new facilities, such as additional basketball courts, skateboard park, handball courts; <br /> • Include park -type amenities, such as restrooms, children's play area, picnic areas, biking and <br /> walking paths; <br /> • Enhance environmental education opportunities provided by access to the existing drainage <br /> channel; and <br /> • Provide adequate support facilities, such as parking, fencing, signage, and lighting. <br /> Neighborhood Impacts <br /> • Uncontrolled student parking along Jeppesen Acres Road; <br /> • Students using Jeppesen Acres Road as a hangout; <br /> • Cars traveling at unsafe speeds; <br /> • Traffic around Meadowlark Elementary School; <br /> • Event /Kidsports activities parking along Norwood; <br /> • Garbage /trash that is not picked up regularly; and <br /> • Glare from baseball lights. <br /> FINDINGS <br /> Based on these comments, Parks Planning staff developed preliminary concept plans that include the <br /> following components: <br /> • Develop new recreation facilities, including: <br /> • Soccer field (1); and <br /> • Basketball court (1). <br /> • Improve existing recreation facilities to improve playability, including: <br /> • Softball fields (3); <br /> • Provide diverse park - related amenities, such as: <br /> • Children's play equipment; <br /> • Covered picnic area; <br /> • Restrooms; <br /> • Covered bike parking; <br /> • Landscaping and street tree plantings; and <br /> • Benches, water fountains, and pedestrian lighting. <br />
