within three weeks. However, I do feel there are several things that we discussed that can be
done to mitigate the parking impacts to the grass area immediately.
There were a number of specific issues and I will use a question / response format to show what
can be done in the short term.
Question: Can pool patrons b
e directed to use the Roosevelt Middle School parking lot?
Response: District 4J staff have indicated that they feel parking is limited and in short supply for
most of the year at Roosevelt Middle School and have concerns regarding allowing the City to
direct people to use their lot. During the summer months of June and July 4J staff stated school
activities and programming at Roosevelt generate parking needs that requires retaining priority
use of available school parking. However, in the short term 4J has agreed to allow limited use of
parking at Roosevelt until the teachers return on August 27. While not forbidding public use, their
suggestion was that we ask pool staff to park at Roosevelt instead of directing the general public
to park there.
A majority of staff have been asked to park at Roosevelt Middle School until August 27
The general public can park at the lot however, considering 4J's concerns, we will not
place signs directing the public to this location. We have asked 4J to participate in the
upcoming public meetings this fall and winter to help find long term solutions.
Question: Can changes in parking practices be implemented to ensure the overflow parking
area is used for that purpose only and not as an option that is available at all times of the day?
Response: Yes. We have installed ballards that will allow access to this area to be
physically closed. The Amazon Pool staff will only open this area during in anticipated
times of high usage (primarily during recreation swim times). The overflow area will be
closed at the end of this high use time, once all of the vehicles have vacated the lot. Staff
will make a good faith effort to keep the lot closed on days when attendance is projected
to be lower than normal. The opening and closing of the lot will be at the discretion of the
pool staff.
Question - Can signing be changed to encourage parking in the paved areas before they proceed
to the overflow lot?
Response — Yes. Signage calling this area "additional parking" has been replaced with
new signs designating it as "overflow parking ". New signage at the entrance to the pool
parking lot will also direct people to use Amazon Community Center parking to the south.
Parking at Hilyard Center will remain reserved for special needs patrons of the center.
Question: Can the gravel which was used to fill potholes in the entry to this area be removed and
the area restored?
Response — Yes. This fall Park and Open Space Division staff will remove the gravel and
place seed in the spots void of vegetation.
Question: Can the "farm style" fencing that has been erected in this area be removed?
Response — Yes. This fall Park and Open Space Division will remove this fencing.
Question — Can the trees over the sidewalk adjacent to Amazon pool be trimmed up in order to
allow pedestrians clear passage.
otl
