Response — Yes. Park and Open Space Division staff will place this work on their schedule
to be performed as tree crew staff are available.
LONG TERM:
Regarding the long term, the timing of this discussion is very good. Typically, it is very hard to
insert an additional planing process to Park Planning's already busy schedule. However, in this
case there is already a public update to the Amazon Park Development Plan on their schedule for
this fall and winter. While the update was initially scheduled to solicit input on projects funded by
the 1998 Park Bond, it is the perfect opportunity to discuss any other Amazon Park issues.
Staff estimate initiating this planning process with a public meeting sometime in October and
conclude with a final public meeting sometime in March or April. The number of public meetings
between those times will vary depending on the amount of input received. This planning effort
will result in a formal amendment to the Amazon Park Development Plan that will then be
adopted by administrative rule.
I realize that this does not meet your short term desire of us immediately closing the overflow
parking area. However, I do hope the items I indicated above that we will do now will mitigate
some of your concerns. The input of people like yourselves, the Amazon Neighborhood
Association, pool patrons, joggers, dog park users, naturalists, community center users, and all
the many other users of Amazon park is important in the creation of a park plan for one of our
premier community parks. The Amazon Neighborhood Association already has an active
subcommittee talking about park issues so I suspect you will be well prepared for the first plan
update meeting this fall. I will ask Park Planning staff to ensure that each of you are on their
notification list for the upcoming meetings. I look forward to listening to the discussions.
Sincerely,
(mailed copies signed)
Johnny Medlin, Director
Parks and Open Space Division
Cc: Mayor and City Council (via e-mail)
Renee Grube
Andrea Riner
Sarah Medary
Carolyn Weiss
3
