Paul and Marcy
Cauthorn sent a letter to Mayor Torrey on July 25, 2003 regarding the same subject.
Mayor Torrey requested staff to investigate the concerns expressed and prepare a
reply. Since both letters are on the same subject it was decided to prepare a single
reply fitting both letters.
I appreciate these letters offering suggestions on how we can work to mitigate
concerns regarding overflow parking at Amazon Park. Parking at Amazon Park has
been an ongoing challenge. In addressing this challenge, we are attempting to
provide safe, convenient access to the pool, community centers and park while
minimizing the impact on neighborhood streets and the park's natural amenities. We
are also hoping to minimize the amount of pavement within the park.
The current Development Plan for Amazon Park was adopted by Administrative Order
58 -94 -25 in 1994. 1 was present at the public meetings for that plan and I recall there
was considerable conversation on the issue of parking. One result of that public
process was that the area immediately west of the Hilyard Community Center was
designated as available for overflow parking. However, almost ten years have gone
by since that plan was adopted and the Amazon Pool has since been renovated. A
number of 1998 Park Bond improvements are slated for Amazon Park. This provides
us with an opportunity to update the park's development plan and to explore some
long term options.
On August 5, 2003 a meeting was held at Amazon Park to discuss the concerns that
were being expressed. Citizens in attendance included Mary Tegel, Paul Cauthorn,
Marcy Cauthorn, and Jan Wilson. Staff present included Renee Grube, Tim Patrick,
and myself. In this meeting we talked about both short term as well as long term
concerns.
SHORT TERM:
We discussed that the current need for overflow parking for Amazon Pool will be, with
the exception of
Some potential hot weekend days in September, over by Labor Day. I do not feel we
can involve all the affected parties in a discussion and bring this issue to consensus
