Ms. Mello noted that there were two entrances to that area. She wondered if it could be made
harder to access by strategically placing posts in the walkway.
Ms. French stated that putting obstructions in the path could create the possibility of injuries in
the dark.
Mr. Bonnett asked how Willamalane would feel about painting a sign directing people to walk
bicycles on the path. Ms. French said she would talk to staff but Willamalane did not look
favorably on the use of signs as a means of changing behavior.
In response to a question from Mr. Bonnett, Ms. French said a vote from the CPC might influence
Willamalane to paint signs.
Mr. Biggs remarked that there might be some money to facilitate the painting of some signs in the
house bill that had been passed that provided some funding for the Olympic Trials.
Ms. Behm, seconded by Ms. Nunn, moved that the CPC recommend painting
"Walk Bikes" on the path at the East Gate entrance.
Ms. Jones offered a friendly amendment to specify that fluorescent paint be used.
The maker and second accepted the amendment.
Ms. May offered a friendly amendment to substitute the word `urge' for the word
`recommend' in the motion. Outreach
Ms. Behm thanked everyone who had provided input to Kevin Finney, Park Maintenance
Manager regarding the BmX track. She related that Mr. Sonnichsen had engaged the track
manager, Lance McGuire, in a conversation and had made progress. She noted that track
users were "parking out of bounds" of their leasehold, but less than before. She believed that
they were going in the right direction and it might take some patience.
Mr. Peara observed that the track users had done a lot to improve fire safety since the last
season.
Ms. Behm reported that the committee had met with Margaret Hallock, who worked at the
Wayne Morse Center, about the bridge naming. She explained that there was a movement
afoot to give the bridge a Calapooya name to honor them. She said Representative Peter
DeFazio's office had been contacted and several members of the committee had visited the
MINUTES— Citizen Planning Committee of the October 11, 2007 Page 5
Whilamut Natural Area
