Ms. Larison agreed that more informational, positive signs would be good to have. She suggested, "Help
Protect Flora and Fauna by Staying on the Path and Keeping Your Pets with You" or "Look for Native
Plants, Small Animals, Butterflies, Frogs, Snakes, Lizards, Turtles, Birds Possibly Nesting April 15 to July
15."
Ms. Brand noted that signs needed to be short; otherwise people would not read them.
Mr. Larison suggested putting the main message in a larger font; and the rest in a smaller font for people
who wanted more information.
Mr. Hughes asked how often people were ticketed for having their dogs off - leash.
Mr. Sonnichsen noted that it happened more often when there was more enforcement.
Mr. Holloter asked if there had been any effort to get CPC information out via local media. He suggested
that this happen.
Mr. Richardson said he could not volunteer staff time for that purpose, but Kelly Darnell was the POS di-
vision's marketing person, and assisted staff with public notices to media.
Ms. Behm suggested the signs say "Nesting on the Ground," since many people assumed all nests were in
trees. She thought the largest contributors to off -leash dog activity were the people who did it regularly.
She stated that the problem had improved over the last two years.
Mr. Holloter agreed.
Ms. Behm stated that the problem needed to improve even more if the Western Meadowlark was to return.
She suggested targeting the households in the area. She said she could put a flier in with the holiday din-
ner flier in her neighborhood, which was nearby.
Mr. Biggs suggested Public Service Announcements, and making it clear how much the fine was for hav-
ing one's dog off -leash in the area.
Mr. Hughes suggested issuing the fines more often.
Mr. Sonnichsen mentioned that in the Park Host Report, the Park Host, Erin Lamb, stated that she wanted
to see signage relating to off -leash dogs at the Community Garden parking area just northwest of the Park
Host residence.
Mr. Biggs also suggested placing signage on the bulletin board in the dog park.
Ms. Mello mentioned the group that had gotten the dog park there.
Mr. Richardson said he would find out who the CPC could talk to from the group.
Mr. Sonnichsen said that the CPC needed to interact with the Alton Baker Park dog park group.
Mr. Richardson passed around a sign that read: "Sensitive Area — Dogs ON Leash Please!" He said that
staff would not be opposed to the CPC putting such signs up if they also committed to maintaining them.
MINUTES -- Citizen Planning Committee for the July 15, 2010 Page 6
Whilamut Natural Area
