Ms. Mello and others commented that the area looked great with the improved sight lines.
Mr. DeBord said Springfield police officers were patrolling the park on bikes. As a result it was hoped
less drug use and illegal camping would occur in the park.
Ms. Behm asked if the officers knew bikes were not supposed to go on river paths so they could discou-
rage bikers from using them.
Mr. DeBord said they did, and that signs were posted
New Member Recruitment
Mr. Hyde said the CPC still had a Springfield vacancy. Willamalane had still not received an application.
Willamalane had taken the actions the CPC had suggested, including putting the ad on the website again,
extending the application date, sending an email blast to Willamalane's volunteer database, contacting
former members of the group and a public service announcement. The application date had been extended
again to August 10, targeting a September 14 appointment. The position had also been publicized in the
Register- Guard. He asked CPC members again to find people and encourage them to apply.
Mr. Ard suggested announcing the vacancy in the Eugene Weekly.
Mr. Hyde said he would do so if the Eugene Weekly did it for no cost. Willamalane would keep extending
the deadline until the position was filled.
11. Old Business
Ms. Behm wished to do more outreach as part of the outreach committee, but was spending so much time
on the ODOT project. She asked if anyone else, such as new CPC members, wished to be part of the out-
reach committee to speak to civic organizations and do other outreach activities.
12. New Business
Ms. Mello thanked Ms. Behm for inviting all to the Talking Stone tribute. She asked new members to in-
troduce themselves.
Mr. Andriola said he had done a lot of volunteer work at the native plant nursery, which was right across
the street from the WNA. He also liked running and biking.
Ms. Moore was new to Eugene. She was learning the area and how policy worked. She was trained as an
environmental historian and thought she could learn a lot from serving on the CPC. She was also a native
plant nursery volunteer. She said she was a potential candidate for the outreach committee "in a while."
Mr. Sonnichsen said informal outreach had been done the previous Sunday. He and Mr. Ard had been dis-
cussing the North Bank path issue. A woman had been standing nearby on Leisure Lane and had asked
them about the talking stones.
Mr. Ard said that she had asked if they knew anything about the talking stones, and Mr. Sonnichsen had
replied to her, "we know everything about them!"
MINUTES— Citizen Planning Committee for the July 21, 2011 Page 14
Whilamut Natural Area
