5. Announcements and Points of Information
There were no announcements or points of information.
6. Reports on subcommittees
a. Wildlife/Habitat
Mr. Sonnichsen said that on the previous Sunday he had been walking across the informal trail from the
side nearest the I -5 bridge, crossing the entire prairie area. He had observed that at each end of the trail
were signs denoting ground nesting birds – the signs were unobtrusive and low to the ground. Ms. Brand
had spares and was checking them.
b. Government Relations
Bridge Naming
Mr. Sonnichsen said that the naming of the I -5 bridge as the "Whilamut Passage Bridge" was at the point
where the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde would be meeting to discuss and perhaps endorse the
name. There could be a delegation of CPC and ODOT people going to meet with the Confederated Tribes.
On June 25, the Oregon Geographic Names Board endorsed the name. If the Confederated Tribes weighed
in favorably, the next step would be for ODOT to go to the OTC. He thought the name would be favora-
bly received by OTC since ODOT had endorsed it.
Bridge Construction
On June 21 a bridge tour had occurred. Seventeen people had participated including Mr. McIntire, Ms.
Larison, Ms. Behm, Ms. Brand, Ms. Moore, Mr. Andriola and himself as well as members of the Fairmont
Neighbors, and members of the public. ODOT's Sonny Chickering and Karl Wieseke had led the tour.
Karen Hyatt from the University of Oregon Community Relations and Mr. Hyde had also been in atten-
dance. It was an interesting tour, with many remarking on the extensive amount of rebar in the bridge
deck.
Ms. Ferschweiler asked if the "fish bladders were still up and running," or if that stage was finished.
Mr. Sonnichsen said that impact attenuators were present to prevent the explosion of fish bladders.
Mr. Hyde said this was used during the pile driving stage of construction.
Mr. Sonnichsen said they were not active at this time, but would be used when the work bridge was ex-
tended to the east in preparation for the deconstruction of the detour bridge that was currently there.
Ms. Ferschweiler asked if the impact attenuators were still in place.
Mr. Sonnichsen said that they were.
Mr. Sonnichsen noted that the ORI building had been relocated between two existing buildings in the ri-
verfront park south of the railroad tracks.
MINUTES— Citizen Planning Committee for the July 21, 2011 Page 2
Whilamut Natural Area
