Recommendation: The City of Eugene will continue to work with the Science Factory to
explore opportunities for minimizing soil compaction from vehicle traffic on grass areas
around the Science Factory. Options may include alternating the ingress /egress to parking
area, protecting areas with a soil covering, and enhancing existing turf coverage. As a
condition of the Science factory's annual parking permit, continue to establish and enforce
adequate vehicle setbacks from natural resource areas, including trees, the canoe canal, and
the ponds.
10. BMX Facility Parking. EVBMX allows football parking and tailgating on their 5 acre
leasehold in Alton Baker Park. The issue of soil compaction around two large evergreen trees
within the dirt parking lot of the BMX facility was addressed through a renegotiated lease.
Recommendation: Continue to monitor use of EVBMX leasehold area to ensure setbacks are
being enforced and other areas of the park are not being encroached upon.
IMPACTS TO PARK AMENITIES/ VANDALISM
Minimal impacts to park amenities were observed, however other impacts related to park
amenities were observed.
11. Lack of temporary restroom facilities- southwest corner of Lot 8, west of the BMX
parking lot, by the canoe canal footbridge, and at the north end of the Autzen bridge.
Physical evidence and eyewitness observation confirms that there is an insufficient quantity of
restroom facilities in these areas.
Recommendation: The University has agreed to promote knowledge of the new restrooms on
the south side of the stadium. Coordinate with EVBMX to determine if an additional
temporary facility is required on their leasehold during football season. Mitigation of this
impact is a high priority and should be in place prior to the 2003 football season.
12. Lack of restroom facilities- The Science Factory. Additional facilities placed at the Science
Factory during the 2002 season have successfully addressed the issue in this area.
Recommendation: Continue the placement of facilities near the canoe canal and in the
general area of tailgaiting. Facilities will only be present during football season.
IMPACTS TO TRAILS
Additional trail related impacts were addressed under "Impacts to Vegetation"
14. Short cuts from Lot 8. A pedestrian access points from Lot 8 up to the sidewalk along Leo
Harris Parkway was constructed prior to the 2002 season. This has lessened the amount of
shortcutting, although instances were still observed.
ABP Monitoring- 2002 Season Summary Page 5
