Day Island and the Autzen Trail after the game.
In areas where the soil composition and sunlight is adequate to support good grass cover,
allow the grass to remain at a height of 6 -8 inches. It was noted that in areas where there is
good grass cover and at a relatively tall height, soil compaction and loss of vegetation was
minimal. Similarly, soil compaction was minimized in areas that had a thick layer of leaf
mulch on the ground.
Additional measures have been discussed over the last couple of years. Although they will
not be implemented at this time, they should be considered in the future if the above
recommendations are not satisfactorily addressing the issue. These additional measures
include the following:
• Where feasible along the main corridor path, create a bark - surface path immediately
adjacent to the paved path. This would extend the width of the path without increasing the
amount of impervious surface. Due to width constraints, this bark - surface path may not be
continuous. The path would also serve as an extension of Pre's Trail from the north end of
the Autzen footbridge to the intersection of the main path with the existing Trail.
• The planting of native shrubs directly adjacent to the path may serve as obstructions for
those traveling off of the paved path, making this option less desirable. The establishment
of such shrubs may be difficult as they would be vulnerable to trampling.
• Place temporary or permanent fencing adjacent to specific locations along the path to
encourage individuals to stay on the path or to protect sensitive areas. Fencing placement
must address public safety concerns. Fencing can be designed with a rustic /natural
character.
8. West Alton Baker Park. Numerous pedestrians were observed walking off paved surfaces in
the western portion of the park. Trail widening has occurred in certain locations along Pre's
Trail, and some informal trails have been established through open fields en route to the
stadium.
Recommendation: Continue monitoring through the next season for site specific impacts
both to Pre's Trail and the creation of new trails. Focus baseline documentation in these
areas. Additionally, parking attendants in West Alton Baker Park can provide directional
assistance to individuals, encouraging existing trail usage.
9. Grass Parking Areas around the Science Factory. The movement of vehicles on unpaved
surfaces can cause soil compaction. A majority of the areas where vehicles park is already
compacted due to historic plans for additional building sites and these areas are not of gr8at
concern. However, once soils are wet from rain, there is a greater chance of disturbing
vegetation and creating erosion issues. Some of these impacts were observed as a result of
vehicles parking off of paved areas. Although a setback from water bodies is addressed in the
annual parking permit, several cars were noted to have been parked within 7 feet of the top of
the bank.
ABP Monitoring- 2002 Season Summary Page 4
