Reports and Recommendations, June 16, 1999
Page 8
and middle schools. The new Director of School Services and the Director of
Educational Support Services will report to the Assistant Superintendent for
Instructional Services (Tom Henry).
Labor Relations: The Director of Labor Relations will report directly to the
Superintendent rather than to the Director of Human Resources. This more
accurately reflects our current operation. The superintendent, after consulting
with the school board, provides direction to the Director of Labor Relations during
negotiations and in dealing with various labor relations issues.
Educational Equity and Diversity: The organizational chart now makes it clear
that the superintendent's office is responsible for coordinating issues related to
educational equity and diversity issues. We need to continue to emphasize
educational equity and increase the diversity of our work force.
Principals' Resource Team: The organization chart has never recognized the
unique role and responsibility of the principals' resource team, which is a group of
four principals who help coordinate the work of the principals, provide support to
them as they deal with school operational issues, and serve on the superinten-
dent's direct staff. The team is composed of two elementary principals, one
middle school principal, and one high school principal. They are released part
time from their responsibilities as building principals.
Superintendent's Core Team: When I was hired as interim superintendent, we
agreed that I would work with a core executive team composed of Tom Henry,
Director of Instruction, Marilyn Clotz, Director of Staff and Community Relations,
and David Piercy, Assistant to the Superintendent. I intend to continue the core
team and am changing their titles to more accurately reflect their current work and
level of responsibility. Tom Henry's title will be changed to Assistant Super-
intendent for Instructional Services, Marilyn Clotz's to Executive Director of Staff
and Community Relations, and David Piercy's to Deputy Superintendent. I will
be proposing to you in July that they continue to receive the pay increments you
approved last July.
I believe these changes will more accurately reflect how the school district operates
and improve our ability to provide an effective, responsive, and accountable
instructional program.
VIII. CONSENT GROUP - ITEMS FOR ACTION
1. Approve School Board Minutes
The superintendent recommends approval of the minutes for the regular board
meetings held on April 14 and April 21, 1999, and the work session held June 5,
1999.
2. Approve CyberSchool's Application for Membership to the Northwest
Association of Schools and Colleges
Last August the 4J CyberSchool received notification from the Northwest
Association of Schools and Colleges that it could no longer claim accredited status
through North Eugene High School. The Association changed its policy so that all
