Reports and Recommendations, June 16, 1999
Page 7
culturally, economically, and politically. To meet these challenges, we need to
examine what we are doing and adapt our programs and support systems so that
we can continue to provide the excellent and responsive program we offer now,
and have been able to offer in the past. Such a discussion will allow the district
and the community to work together to shape our educational future and identify
our educational priorities.
At the work session we agreed upon several basic principles that will be used to
guide the process. They include staying focused on our educational mission and
community engagement. We also agreed on the charge to the Schools of the
Future Committee, which will be composed of board members, community
leaders, employee groups, parents, and district staff who will assist the district in
identifying those characteristics of the schools and the school system that will
make us capable of preparing students for the new century. We confirmed that a
Council of Community Advisors would be appointed by the superintendent to
bring an even broader community -based perspective to the process by providing
feedback to the Schools of the Future Committee as it plans its work, and later as it
formulates its recommendations.
We also agreed that we would invite staff, parents, citizens, and students to
participate in task groups that would study and propose strategies and outcomes
in the following areas:
•Community Engagement and Governance;
•Educational Programs for the 21st Century Learner;
• School Choice;
• Educational Technology;
•School Facilities; and
• Resources.
At the board meeting we will debrief the work session and continue to discuss
membership on the various committees and task groups.
3. Receive a Legislative Update
At the meeting we will provide you with a report on the status of the various
funding, program, and operational issues that are being considered by the Oregon
Legislature.
4. Review the Superintendent's Administrative Organization for 1999 -2000
I will be making several changes in the district's organization for next school year
that I will share with you at your June 16 meeting. A copy of the 1999 -2000
Organization Chart is included in the packet. The changes are summarized below.
Instruction Department: In order to better coordinate regular and special
education services, I am merging Educational Support Services into the Instruction
Department. I will also be using a director position (Director of Public Affairs)
that has been vacant for several years to create a new Director of School Services
position who will be responsible for the supervision of the district's elementary
