S 7
Subject Sports Complex Fax # c5,
June 25, 1999
Mayor Jim Torrey
City of Eugene Council
777 Pearl Street
Eugene, OR 97401
Dear Mayor
The purpose of this letter is to address issues about the planned sports
field partnership. The four field approached approved by 4J and the
City is being moved forward without the funds to do the project in a
responsible manner. I am writing primarily about the Sheldon Sports
Complex.
These projects you are committing to fall $1,000,000 short of the
desired needs of the school district. I hear private funding will be
raised to make up the difference. Does this mean we will have fields
named after donors with large signs polluting the neighborhood? Or will
it be plan B to allow billboard advertising on the perimeter fencing.
Or a combination of both to make a truly hideous view. I seem to recall
great efforts by the City government to limit commercial advertising
signs. Do you have the control or does 4J when it comes down to the
method used to raise this extra million or more if cost overruns occur.
What about the Sheldon Community Center planning day where one
suggestion had the stadium field located behind the Willakenzie Fire
Station? This would have been the best spot to reduce the impact on the
neighborhood. It would require relocating the softball field and
spanning an open drainage ditch. What about the parking to access this
sports complex being over a 1/4 mile away. To make Improvements to do
the job RIGHT would cost money that is not there. It is easier for
council to vote for this moment in time and leave it to the next
generations of council to fix their lack of responsible stewardship and
foresight. The tax payers have given you millions. Have you traveled to
these sights and looked at what is being done? If you go to Sheldon,
which I hope you find the time to do. Please park at the East end the
of Sheldon High School parking lot (Coburg Road end) and take the hike
that you are approving as adequate parking facilities. Once on the
proposed field site, envision at how close this all weather stadium
field and its' lights until 11 P.M. six days a week are going to effect
the neighbors. Notice also how much closer the neighborhood streets are
much closer to the proposed complex than where you parked.
At the Council meeting I heard two question from the Council to the City
staff as to who can use these million dollar plus fields. Did you get a
straight answer? Did they tell you that not you or your neighbor were
going to be allowed on these field_ Maybe a better question would have
been, "Can I take my child or a friend over to one of these fields and
8
