07/01/99 08:26 $541 683 6826 EUG PUBLIC WORKS 444 MAINTENANCE a002
play catch ?" No, the answer of use was that the school would schedule
activities during their booked time and organized sports would schedule
the other times. How many FTEs will be needed to book these field? Can
only the people that pay to participate in sports use the field? Did
the tax payers realize that they paid for a fabulous series of stadiums
and that unless they want to join and pay again to belong to an
organized team they are out of luck? When I look at my participation in
medial sports, it is not the Kidsports type teams I reflect on, but it
is the family and neighbor impromptu games that I have the fond memory
of. I realize that times have changed and commercialize organized sport
is suppose to be what's best for me.
After WWII, industry was booming, business was for profit alone, forget
the community and laugh at the environment damage. In the early 70's
the Environmental Protection Agency was formed. Industry was told to
clean up their act and stop polluting the air, water, and land.
Government became responsible and demanded that industry and business
deal with the impacts they were making. Who if not the Council is going
to provide stewardship to City development projects? Would you let a
business like Price Costa or a Church construct a mega facility and use
the surrounding neighborhood as the parking lot for thousands of
customers throughout the year? I think net. But who if not the council
would apply the same standards to City development? When you develop a
facility that will draw hundreds of thousands users over the next 20
years, do it right if you have the funds. If you don't have the funds
to do it right, rethink. Do not act like industry of the 1950s' with
the concept of doing proclaimed good for the world justifies the damage
to the surrounding area, The surrounding neighborhood is just that, a
neighborhood where people use the narrow streets for neighborhood
activity. The business mentality to sacrifice a few for the good of the
whole is good strategy during a war (unless you are the few). This is
not a war situation. It is about building a community where to do it
right is a money issue, not a sacrifice. If not a money issue, ask again '7
what happened to the full size all weather soccer field.
The City staff presented the best bang buck approach? Would not more
fields on undeveloped City property like Kenney Loop service as a
foothold in the area and provide more fields for day time use where kids
will be best served? What is wrong with having sports during day light
hours and getting the younger generation back home, doing homework and
family activities in the evening?
As part of the City's Cal Young neighborhood, we expect Public Safety
emergency response. If the traffic you are imposing on our neighborhood
prevents Public safety response in a timely manner, expect legal
action. Build your mega Sports Field complex(s), just develop an
infrastructure to keep the business on your property. Be the true
responsible stewards of our community and plan this expenditure better
than agreeing to projects where the real plan exceed the funding.
Sincerely,
Robert & Diane Sprick
2145 Carmel Ave.
Eugene, OR 97401
9
