HAMMITT Bob
From: MEDLIN Johnny R
To: EVELETH Doug A
Cc: ETTER John F; MORGAN Dick A; HAMMITT Bob; Patrick, Tim (RIS1)
Subject: Lighting at Peterson Park
Date: Monday, February 06, 1995 8:30AM
Hi Doug,
I recently reviewed a memo from Tim Patrick to you and Dick Morgan regarding lighting at Peterson Park and
while I'm cautiously optimistic I wanted to flag a couple of issues for you.
First, I believe you will need more input from the immediate neighbors than is supplied by working with the
Neighborhood group. I say this from a recent experience of our starting to do a picnic table placement project at
the request of ABC and then having the project stopped by the immediate neighbors who didn't want the tables
next to their properties. I think lighting has the potential of being even more controversial. At the very least 1
would think individual notification of the immediate neighbors and allowing a period of time for their comment
would be required. I'm not sure who would need to do this public process but it is not in Park Planning's current
very full work plan. I would want to look very closely at current project priorities prior to John's taking on another
project right now.
Second, I suspect that John Etter's recent experience with the Amazon jogging path lighting project may of
changed his feelings a little about volunteers taking on a large volunteer project. There were problems with not
sufficient review of the design, lack of volunteer supervision and lack of knowledge of construction technique.
We ended up having to do extensive inspection that wasn't anticipated. I'm not sure who would take staff lead
on design, review, and construction coordination but it very likely would be more time consuming for staff than
one would think..
I don't want to throw cold water on the idea and enthusiasm, but neither do I once again want us to get into the
middle of a project without having the details worked out ahead of time.
Thanks
Johnny
Page 1
