MINUTES OF THE USER COMMITTEE MEETING
November 17, 2000
10:00 -11:30 am in the Parr Room of the Education Center
Present: Bill Hirsh, Jim Denker, Tim Rhay, Renee Grube, Charlie Warren, John Crane, Scott
Landgreen, and Pat Bonney. Arnold Hultberg arrived at 10:20 am. Absent: Jarvis Gomes, Jeff
Lankston, Mitzi Colbath, and Teri Higgins.
1. Review of Minutes. Comment on minutes by Jim Denker. With regard to the field paint,
Sheldon was the first field painted and had 2 coats put on at full strength. Jim said for the
remaining schools, the paint was diluted and only one coat was put on. That worked much
better.
2. Update on Remaining YSP /Stadium Construction. All is substantially complete. There
will still be punch list items to be taken care of. The rest rooms will be open all the time. They
will only be locked when fields are locked.
3. Update on Bleachers Acquisition. The District has gone out to bid twice and both times
bids came in over budget. We are about to try for a third time. Fund raising continues:
Corporate donations so far amount to about $10,000 per region. Other sources :
- Beverage venders (4J gets some funds) $320,000
t of - Board must decide regarding commercialism
- Contingency still has some funds that could be used for bleachers
- Coke/Pepsi contract will provide funds
4. Update of fields Use this Fall. Jim Denker reported the new fields got lots of usage and lots
of requests. At South there were 6 -7 soccer teams and 3 football teams. Varsity teams got top
priority. Everyone who used the field liked it. No reported injuries to knees, ankles, shins, or
heads. Heard many positive comments and concession sales were up. More people (students,
families, & alumni) came to games than ever before. Younger kids would come to games and
go play in the sports parks if they got bored.
Arnold Hultburg shared a memo from some of the Sheldon Area Neighbors on how the new YSP
and field affected them, personally. Many of the "problems" mentioned got ironed out as the
season progressed. It appears that a few neighbors are sabotaging the perimeter gate /locks
system by purposely unlocking gates during events (after the coach has locked the gate). The
purpose of having them locked during events is to prevent people from parking on Norwood.
Bill Hirsh suggested this be taken up at a Neighborhood meeting. Arnold suggested having a
security person man the gate the first half of the game to train & educate neighbors & others.
Regarding the twisted metal left near the ball diamond that was mentioned in Arnold's memo,
Bill will ask Teri Higgins to have the contractor remove it and also the contractor's sign.
t re Regarding the discuss ring, Jim Denker will ask Mike Olson to check out the concern that a
good male thrower could land his discuss inside the new field.
