Ms. Mello had a copy of the last Nearby Nature brochure, which she circulated.
Ms. Nunn said that Ms. Stein knew she needed to work with the CPC as well as Mr. Richardson. Mr.
Sonnichsen said Ms. Stein was eager to work with the subcommittee.
Ms. Nunn anticipated Ms. Stein would first look into costs. She advocated for a meeting of the Signage
Subcommittee for further discussion. She had communicated to Ms. Stein that she did not think the CPC
wanted to see too many signs in the park. There was general concurrence.
Mr. Richardson said Ms. Stein called him earlier in the week and he had encouraged her to contact Ms.
Nunn. The City was working on an overall map of the park, and he did not know if the City would
incorporate the Nearby Nature names. He deferred to the CPC in regard to the area of the map and agreed
with Mr. Sonnichsen that Nearby Nature was interested in working with it.
Mr. Sonnichsen said the large map in the brochure failed to show the entire natural area. He believed
there were many ways to improve it.
Ms. Morrison asked if there would be one map of the entire park area produced for tourists. Mr.
Richardson said that staff was working on a map of the park to be displayed on all the kiosks and possibly
a brochure. Mr. Sonnichsen said that Nearby Nature did not think it was adequately consulted about the
kiosk maps and he hoped the brochure would be a "win -win" for all involved.
Ms. Brand thought it would be nice if the brochure mentioned plant and animal species living in the park.
c. Wildlife Habitat
Mr. Ard said the subcommittee currently lacked a chair and no member had volunteered to take that role,
which he thought was needed. He invited interested members to serve. He said the subcommittee had not
recently met. He had some thoughts in regard to the upcoming Olympic Trials regarding the protection of
wildlife habitat. He asked what plans were in regard to temporary signage to let visitors know the area
was a natural area and directing them to stay on the paths. He wanted to know if temporary fencing for
vulnerable restoration plantings could be installed during that time.
Mr. Cooper noted his interest in chairing the subcommittee but was concerned that until April he would
have a potential conflict. Other subcommittee members suggested that he take the chair and simply
excuse himself as appropriate. Mr. Cooper agreed.
d. Government Relations
Mr. Sonnichsen discussed Mr. Holloter's remarks, saying that no one was thinking of giving anything to
the UO. He had received a report on the baseball stadium siting issue, which he circulated. The report
implied interest on the part of the UO in parkland, including sites in the Whilamut Natural Area. The
sites included the BMX track, Lot 8, and the canoe canal. He had tried to secure more information about
the author of the report and its contents.
MINUTES —Citizen Planning Subcommittee of the January 10, 2008 Page 3
Whilamut Natural Area
