15. I've heard that my supervisor, HR or ISD personnel can come and look at what's on
my computer or at records that show where I've been on the internet. Is that true?
Yes, that's true. Your computer is City property and the City has the right to access whatever is
on your computer without getting you permission first. You should also remember that whatever
is on your computer is subject to public disclosure under public records law. If you want
something to be private and confidential, do not place it on your City computer. In addition, the
City may also access employees' computers and records for administrative purposes.
16. What if I need to make personal copies or send a personal fax, or if I want to print
something off my computer for personal use? Is that OK?
Limited personal use of fax machines, printers, copiers is acceptable if the use is minimal, is done
on non -work time, and you reimburse the City for all expenses. Limited use generally means
making or printing a few copies or using the fax machine no more than two or three times a
month. Sending faxes long distance is only allowed if you use a personal calling card. You may
not, however, use these City facilities for any activity related to selling something, such as selling
your home, or engaging in a personal business.
17. I'm in charge of the campaign to raise money to construct a new building for my chess
club. Can I type and print out the fundraising letters for my club on my City computer
during my meal period?
No. You are not allowed to use your City computer, printer or copier for any fundraising, to
advocate for an issue or to support any kind of political activity.
18. Every now and then, I like to check on the score of the big game. That's OK, isn't it?
I'm only on the internet for a few seconds.
You can check the score of the big game, as well as do any other type of allowed personal activity
(check the weather, read your personal e-mail, etc), on the City's computer, as long as you do it
before or after work, on your meal period, or on a rest break and your use meets the criteria
outlined in Question 1. You are not allowed to quickly check the score of the big game during
your work time, even if you only do so for a few seconds. Although City -owned televisions are
not office equipment, the same rules would apply to watching a game or checking the score on a
City -owned TV.
19. I'm trying to sell my house, my car and some furniture. Can I post a notice at my work
place?
You may post a notice to sell these types of items on a bulletin board or other area set aside for
that purpose in your work place. You may NOT use your City computer, printer or copier to
create or duplicate the notice.
20. Can I borrow the City's projector to show photos of my vacation at a lunch time
gathering of my co- workers?
If you are having a lunch time gathering of a larger group of co- workers at your work place (such
as the Vicarious Vacation presentations), you may use the City's projector to show slides of your
Human Resources Revised: 07/26/07
