Scenario 5
Biff checked out a City vehicle for a trip to Portland to attend a City- approved
training program. The training began at 8:00 a.m., so Biff decided to take the
car home the night before and leave straight from home. He was also issued a
city cell phone for the trip. On the way home the night before the training, Biff
called his wife and asked if she needed anything from the store and then
stopped to pick up a few groceries she had requested, prior to stopping by his
mother -in -law's to give his wife a ride home. That night, Biff's wife mentioned
that she was free the following day and would love to go to Portland for a day
of shopping while Biff attended his training. Biff didn't see anything wrong with
that suggestion, so they set off together in the city vehicle for Portland the
next morning. Once the training was finished, Biff and his wife spontanteously
decided to take a road trip to the coast and spend the night before returning
home, since it was Friday and neither of them had obligations the next day.
They called friends from Astoria on the city cell phone and arranged to meet
them for dinner in Tillamook. Then, they drove down the coastal highway and
ended up spending the night in Newport before returning to Eugene the next
day. Biff refilled the gas tank on the city vehicle, checked the city vehicle back
in first thing on Monday, and reported to work as usual.
Discussion Questions
Which (if any) of Biff's decisions seem questionable to you, and why?
What other options might Biff have exercised in order to more appropriately
balance the demands of his busy personal life with the City's expectations
around use of city vehicles /equipment?
