Use of City Equipment/Property (Revised 07/26/07) <br /> City equipment, facilities, supplies, and other property are to be used only for City <br /> business and must not be used for personal use either during or outside regular <br /> working hours. Exceptions to this policy are noted in the section below — <br /> Acceptable Uses of Information Technologies. <br /> 4.16.1. Disposal of City Property (Revised 7/27/06) <br /> All personal property of the City (e.g., equipment, supplies or furnishings) must be <br /> properly disposed of when it is no longer needed. There are various methods to <br /> accomplish this including sale, donation, recycling or disposal. No discarded City <br /> property may be taken by any employee including items that are thrown in the <br /> trash. Contact the Purchasing section of the Finance Division for further details on <br /> property disposal. <br /> 4.16.2. General Use of Office Equipment and Technologv <br /> A. Purpose <br /> The City provides equipment to employees to use in the course of doing their jobs. <br /> This policy covers the use of office equipment and technology for internal and <br /> external communication as a tool for conducting the City's business, and as a <br /> research tool and information resource. <br /> The City's office and communications systems require significant investment in <br /> capital and human resources, all funded by scarce public dollars. The City makes <br /> this investment for one and only one purpose: to conduct the business of the City. <br /> City equipment is not a perk or benefit of employment or part of an employee's <br /> compensation package. <br /> This policy applies to all City employees and others who have access to the City's <br /> electronic office equipment and technology. The policy covers all electronic <br /> devices, including computers, laptops, software, telephones, City - issued cell <br /> phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs), cellular -based communications <br /> devices that access the City network, voice mail, faxes, copiers, printers, cameras <br /> and video equipment. <br /> This policy mandates ethical employee use of office equipment and technology. It <br /> encourages use that enhances employee productivity, confirms that electronic <br /> communications used in the conduct of government are generally considered public <br /> records, and prohibits inappropriate use. <br /> It is important to note that unauthorized use of the City's computer system has the <br /> potential for bypassing or damaging the computer system and the City security <br /> protocols by introducing viruses into the City's computer network. Each employee <br /> contributes to the security of the City computer system by adhering to City <br /> computer usage policies.
