Review Draft Eastern Gateway Wetland Restoration Site -- Annual Report
that naturally occur on the site including wet prairie and emergent wetland
types. (Briefly describe conceptual plan) Refer to preliminary conceptual plan
in Appendix
Design Goal:
• To restore the site to a high quality natural habitat with the diversity of
wetland types occuring naturally on the site.
• To provide opportunities for compatible human use of the site, including
wildlife observation, research, and environmental education.
Design Criteria:
• excavate the fill material on the site leaving behind the native (hydric)
soil.
• allow presence of native soils (mapped as Natroy, Courtney and
Holcomb by the Lane County Soil Survey) to determine the site
topography with gentle slopes transitioning to non - wetland areas.
• establish wetland hydrology on the site by lowering soil surface to the
seasonal high water table.
• establish wet prairie plant community south of the existing pond and in
the eastern portion of the site.
• establish emergent meadow and vernal plant communities north of the
pond and western section of the site.
Project Timeline
The Eastern Gateway Wetland Restoration project was designed, constructed and
planted in the same year. The initial work on the project centered around
a suitable location for .84 acre impact at Mahlon Sweet Airport, Eugene
OR. The WEWP had not yet been . formerly adopted by state and federal
agencies. In searching for a suitable site it became clear thatlmaost of the
available mitigation sites required much more restoration than required by the
airport project. Thus the idea to combine the airport mitigation needs with other
smaller projects was conceived. Once this idea was accepted, a memorandum
of agreement was prepared and the design construction and planting occurred
more or less on schedule. Figure _, is a copy of the project time line.
One of the requirements of the MOA was for the City to submit the site
Page 5
•
