There has been quite a flurry of maintenance activity and bridge
repair out there is the last few weeks, which I have only learned about after
the fact. We would like to enure that any projects that are planned do not
result in any detrimental impacts to the wetland and natural resource values
of the site. I don't believe that there has been any major damage caused by
the recent maintenance activity (and I'm really happy that all that trash was
hauled away), but it is a sensitive area, and I'd like to advocate a cautious
approach. For example, when Willow Creek was channelized downstream from
W 18th, the elevation of the stream bed was lowered by several feet, creating
a disequilibrium that has manifested itself as a head cut that is gradually
moving upstreamon the south side of 18th. Eventually, this head cut could work
its way upstream and greatly alter or eliminate the existing wetland habitats
presently found along the creek, by lowering the water table. I would like
have the opportunity to identify any potential problems that may come up in the
future before work begins or resources have been committed to a particular plan
of action. For example, I was told that the bridge over Willow Creek is
planned to be replaced in 5 years, and I have hear rumors about upgrading
W 18th and adding bike paths. The Nature Conservancy would like to have the
opportunity to be involved in planning for these projects, and any others that
come up. Thanks.
Ed Alverson
