There is still
some surface work to be done extending 4' wings on each end of the Bridge
but that will be done at a later date. Don Dunaway of Lane County has
contacted the State for the Bridge inspection. Work consisted of bolting
a new bulk head to the existing ones and doing the same for a major cross
stringer. The eight day project was completed in three. Don contributed
that to two things; 1. The fact that we(City) took the time to go through
the hoops to close the street down for the project. 2. The quality of
the help they received from us. I had originally worried because I had
heard some grumblings about how we were there to observe and not to get
down in the water and mud. I informed those on the project that this was one of
those things that could attract media /political attention. We were there
to do anything we were asked and to do it well. Sounds like everything went
well.
Don is giving us a 5 year guarentee. After that if the Bridge is not
replaced we would be looking at taking the deck off, replacing it and all
the stringers. I would recommend that the Bridge is replaced with something
besides wood. Don said if we start today it will take almost 5 years to get
the necessary permits to replace the Bridge. Since it is on the wetland
area various studies have to be done. I feel we should be letting Eng.
know soon so they can start the necessary steps to getting this done.
The other thing that needs to be recorded(depending on who takes this over)
is that Lane County is loaning us the materials they used. When and if we
get the Bridge replaced they would like the salvage rights to the material
they used(we havent seen the bill yet so Im not sure if they charged us
for the materials).
