Date: 03/23/92
From: Jack Long CEWMJEL - RIS1
To: Gene Shutt CEWMEGS - RIS1
Bob Hammitt CEWMJRH - RIS1
Les Lyle CEWELAL - RIS1
Neil Bjorklund CEPLNHB - RIS1
Subject: Stewart Pond Patch Job
Friday, a 2 person crew from Maintenance Division's sewer repair section capped
the 24 inch concrete storm pipe that swallowed up Stewart Pond. Due to the
skill of the operator (Danny Gonzalez), it was possible to excavate down to the
end of the pipe from the street side of the fence, resulting in no rutting or
compaction of the wetland by the backhoe. Also, by using a very small bucket,
a minimum amount of material was excavated and even this was sidecast so as not
to impact the wetland.
A concrete pancake was cut and cemented into the end of the pipe. It was the
concensus of Deborah Evans and myself that the hole should be backfilled to
prevent it from filling with water and becoming a safety hazard since it was
about 6 to 7 feet deep. Using very clean sandy loam with some bar run in it
that had recently been excavated from a landscape area at the treatment plant,
it was possible to fill the hole from the street and it was not necessary to
back the dump truck onto the wetland. After rough grading with the backhoe,
the crew and myself graded and leveled the fill using shovels, straightened up
the fence, and swept up the work site.
The entire operation went off without a hitch, thanks to both the skill and
efficiency of the repair crew. I would like to commend both Danny Gonzalez
and Bob Edmiston not only for their efficient skillful work but for the concern
they showed in minimizing any impact to the wetalnd area during the entire
repair operation.
Jack Long
. w
