HAMMITT Bob
From: PLAMONDON Scott F
To: BERRIAN Pam C; HAMMITT Bob; MEDLIN Johnny R; DILLER Della M
Subject: FW: Owens Cherry Tree
Date: Thursday, June 08, 1995 5:01 PM
FYI Thanks Scott
From: Shawn Boles
To: Scott.F.PLAMONDON
Subject: Owens Cherry Tree
Date: Thursday, June 08, 1995 3:10PM
Scott - Thanks for info. I think the year 200 approach is a good one
and also like the idea of having multiple propagated trees available
for individuals or organizations who may wish to plant as well.
cheers - Shawn
From: PLAMONDON Scott F
To: BOLES Shawn M
Cc: BERRIAN Pam C
Subject: Owens Cherry Tree
Date: Thursday, June 08, 1995 10:48AM
Councilor Boles, Thank you for your patience in allowing me time to research your issues and get back to
you. As you may know, the Tartarian Cherry tree was very popular before the turn of the century. With
the advent of newer varieties of Cherry trees like Bing and Royal Ann, the Tartarian Cherry faded into
obscurity due to a lack of popularity. Searching for a mature Tartarian Cherry to plant at the Owens
Garden has revealed the lack of availability of this tree. There is room in the park to plant another Cherry
tree and this is a excellent arbor day /week planting. A way we can approach this as follows. There are
local nurseries that are willing to propagate the Owen's Cherry tree. With cutting made this year, a good
sized tree would be ready by the end of the century. What better way to recognize the value of this tree
than to plant its progeny in a very special arbor event to bring in the new century. Not only does this tree
extend and provide continuity for generations but it also provides a continuity of life through the centuries.
If you like this concept, we can start the process and work with the local nurseries to propagate this tree
and have a tree ready for arbor day /week celebration in the year 2000. It is even possible to have a
number of trees produced for other planting throughout the City or available to the public in
commemoration of the Owen's Cherry Tree. Let me know your thoughts and we can plan accordingly.
I am still doing some research on the fruit tree issue and hope to get back to you during the week of June
12th.
Thanks Scott
