Middle Amazon Creek
D. Plant Communities: Existing Conditions & Guidelines for Tree and Shrub
Plantings
1. Fairgrounds to Chambers
a) Existing Conditions
This part of the creek has limited ability to meander. The last part is constrained between private
property and pathways. There are just a few trees and shrubs, mostly willows and non - native
blackberries. In the woody understory layer, there are no associate species.
WILLOW - RIPARIAN FOREST
Canopy
Dominant species
• Salix lucida ssp. lasiandra Pacific willow
Associate species
• Acer macrophyllum Big -leaf maple
• Alnus rubra Red alder
• Fraxinus latifolia Oregon ash
Woody Understory
Y
Dominant species
• Crataegus douglasii Black hawthorn
• Salix spp. Willow
b) Guidelines for Tree and Shrub Plantings
Notes:
• Plan for a 400' section.
• Plants not planted in clusters should be planted along the whole section in an even
spacing.
• For the upper and the top bank, mix different shrubs and trees in a cluster. These clusters
should be spaced to allow for any required mowing. See diagram below.
• Do not plant more than four trees of one species in one cluster.
• Spaces between the clusters will be mowed.
• Between Polk Street and Chambers Street, trees should be planted only on the top of the
bank.
• Shrubs and small trees may be planted on the lower and upper bank, but should be tightly
clustered near trees. Clusters should be spaced 50' -75' to allow mowing between them.
• Willows may be planted along the entire lower bank near the water line.
18
