AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY ItemNo.:
EUGENE CITY COUNCIL Meeting Date: April 12, 1993
Department: Public Works /Maintenance
ITEM TITLE: AWARD PRESENTATION: NEIGHBORWOODS PROGRAM
ACTION REQUESTED: Presentation of awards to NeighborWoods volunteer leaders.
BRIEFING STATEMENT:
In an effort to increase the number of new trees planted and cared for in the
public rights -of -way, the Public Works Department began a volunteer tree
planting program in February 1992 called NeighborWoods. By using volunteers
and innovative planting and care techniques, the City has created a
successful, efficient, and low -cost program that has stretched limited City
resources and provided young trees with the care and maintenance they need to
survive. The volunteers provide the care and water the young trees will need
to make it through the first critical years. In addition, the high - quality
care ensures healthier trees and reduces the likelihood of expensive
maintenance problems later.
In 1993, approximately 190 volunteers and 380 school children planted more
than 400 trees in Eugene neighborhoods and at area schools. The award
ceremony is the City's opportunity to recognize the work and energy of the
volunteers who have made the program a resounding success.
ITEMS UNDER SEPARATE COVER:
1. Awards ceremony agenda
2. List of volunteer leaders (by ward)
3. Instructions for distributing the awards
4. NeighborWoods fact sheet
5.
