* Ideas for this year's Job Shop: How to fill out an employment
application; information on internships and summer jobs; try to tie
in PW Day /Job Shop with school curriculum (needs to be flexible);
strengthen ties with UO Career Development. The best idea of all:
Find out what students need and /or want, and tailor Job Shop to
meet those needs and /or desires.
* Target audience: 9th grade, but be open to students of any grade
or age if they want to participate. 8th grade seems a bit young
for making career choices. First step is to talk with counselors
and career development guides at high schools and LCC and find out
which students they recommend and what topics they believe will
work best.
* Other issues: We need to find a good place to hold Job Shop. The
ideal place would have several small "classroom" areas where par-
ticipants could work without being disturbed, plus a larger common
, ► off area for the speakers and for the general public to see what's
o going on. We want to integrate Job Shop with PW Day as much as
possible. Signs can help inform the public about Job Shop.
* Job Shop Subcommittee: Sandra Gleason will coordinate, with help
from Eric Jones, Sue Rhyne, Donna Stark, Lynn Bryan, and Ann
Richart.
C. Schools need to be contacted ASAP. Donna Stark will edit and mail
a letter to schools this week. The letter will inform schools that
the event has changed (e.g., no hot dogs, some rides eliminated to
reduce risk to City and general public, sensitivity to funding
issues, etc.).
d. Other publicity: Sue Rhyne will include information in next issue
of What's In the Works; Eric Jones will prepare articles for April
and May issues of Newsface; publications and calendars of events
for senior citizens need to be contacted ASAP because they have a
long lead time; neighborhood newsletters also need info ASAP; try
approaching What's Happening with "bulldozer fantasy "; Eric Jones
is working with grocery stores and fast food restaurants to try and
round up sponsors for printing info on grocery sacks, tray liners,
etc.
e. Traffic flow /crowd control was discussed. The planning group
agreed to move some children's activities (e.g., assembling pipes,
coloring, etc.) to the transportation bays. The main entrance to
the event will remain the north door to the large conference room.
Dick Hubbard will lead a tour of the PWM /PWT yards at the next
planning meeting.
f. Coloring contest is labor- intensive but important to involving
children in the event. Biggest need: a permanent mounting surface
for entries. Dick Hubbard will arrange 4x8 panels that can be
