SUMMARY OF MINUTES
PUBLIC WORKS DAY PLANNING COMMITTEE
March 2, 1992
Large Conference Room /Public Works Maintenance
1820 Roosevelt Blvd.
Present: Sandra Gleason (PWA), Sue Rhyne (PWA), Todd Anderson (PWW),
Lynn Bryan (PWE), Donna Stark (PWM), Dick Hubbard (PWM), Eric Jones
(PWE, note taker)
I. REVIEW OF RECOMMENDATIONS BY DIVISION MANAGERS
Sandra reported that Division Managers reviewed the recommendations made
by the PW Day brainstorming group on February 21 and agreed to all rec-
ommendations with several minor modifications:
a. Date and hours will be the same as previous years: Thursday, May
21, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
b. The primary target for PW Day audience will continue to be elemen-
tary students, as well as taxpayers, seniors, minorities.
C. High -risk activities, e.g. rides on the cherry picker and, the PCO
scooters will be eliminated and only people 18 and older will be
able to operate backhoes and heavy equipment. The planning commit-
tee asked Dick Hubbard to discuss with Facilities Maintenance some
ideas and /or solutions for increasing the safety of the nail -driv-
ing contest, including a roped off area, safety goggles, safety
vests, etc. Another idea was for the carpenters to put together
several wood puzzles for kids to assemble.
d. Wastewater and Transportation staff will be asked to staff the food
booth (i.e., popcorn and pop) and City staff lounge (with hot dogs,
chili, pototo chips, or ? ?). Todd Anderson from WWTP and Kay
Kronholm and Diane Bishop from PWT will coordinate the food activi-
ties, including any necessary Health Division permits.
II. DISCUSSION ITEMS (from 1990 Public Works Day Debrief)
a. Theme is "Public Works And You." Sue Rhyne has created a draft
logo. The theme can be expanded (e.g., You as a Volunteer, You as
a Taxpayer, You as a Service User, You and a Potential Career).
b. Job Shop is a very important part of Public Works Day. Division
Managers added the minority community and women to the list of
target audiences. Resources to identify this target group: lists
of DBE companies, SWPIC.
* What worked well last year: A strong link between Job Shop and PW
Day; Job Stat cards; tours; speakers and presentations (especially
those by Chris andersen and Terry Smith). What didn't work so well:
One -on -one sessions with City staff (not enough time to spend with
individual students).
