Date: 02/23/93
From: Johnny Medlin CEWMJRM - RIS1
To: Bob Hammitt CEWMJRH - RIS1
Subject: Pools and Lost Hair ??
Bob, for now I'd look at this as simply a FYI.
Claude today received an anonomous call from a lady who described her-
self as a concerned mother of a frequent swimmer at Sheldon. She said
that she had noticed that her son's hair was greying at the tips and that
she had observed (Smelled ?) strong chlorine odors at the pool at various
times recently. She stated that she didn't think much of it except very
recently when her son was getting ready for a swim meet she asked if he
was going to shave body hair. (I didn't know this was a normal practice
at that level of competition.) Her son replied that he didn't have to
because he no longer had any hair growing on his arms and legs. This
concerned the lady and she called to report it. She also asked if we
were aware of any adverse affects that high chlorine in a pool might
cause.
Claude said that he explained to her that the staff running the pool had
not changed for very many years and that the chemical logs didn't show
any variations but that he would check into it. Since she wouldn't give
her name he asked her to call back and he would give her an update on
his research. After discussing this with Claude, he said..that he was
going to contact Doug Post of Recreation to see if other complaints had
been received recently or in past years. Also, he said that he would
let Chuck Solin know of this anonomous complaint and ask his advice. He
is going to pose the adverse affects question to the City Doctor after
discussing this with Chuck.
I'll let you know if more comes of this.
Johnny
