G _ i i _ i
August 18, 2000
CONTACT: Tom Larsen, Transportation Planning Engineer, 682-8450
Gary McNeel, Traffic Operations Supervisor, 682-8451
From Public Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NUMBER OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS DECLINES IN EUGENE IN 1999
Traffic accidents in Eugene are down in almost every category, according to statistics
compiled by the Eugene Public Works Department.
In 1999, there were a total of 2,052 traffic accidents in the city, down almost 15% from
the 1998 total of 2,414. The number of injury accidents declined to 778, down from 969 in 1998,
while the number of fatal accidents fell to three from eight in 1998. During the same period,
bicycle accidents dropped to 87, from 116 in 1998, while pedestrian accidents held steady at 51.
Because of the number of complex factors that affect traffic accident trends, it's not easy

to pinpoint the reasons for the decline. However, traffic enforcement and transportation safety
improvements deserve some of the credit.
One place where transportation safety improvements appear to have been effective is in

the Ferry Street Bridge corridor, where the City recently completed $30 million worth of

transportation improvements. Between the bridge on-ramp at Seventh Avenue and Mill Street

and the intersection of Coburg and Oakway, a total of 59 accidents were recorded in 1999,

compared to an average of 114 accidents per year from 1990 through 1996.
Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phnnc• l~d~ 1 RR9_r,9R9 • FOX• l~,di l RA9_RR9R • www ci aunana nr us
