News Release Traffic Accidents Decline in Eugene
August 18, 2000
Page 2
Despite the decline in accidents, Dave Reinhard, the City's transportation engineer,
cautioned that more than 2,000 accidents a year indicates a continuing need for traffic safety.
"Looking at the number of accidents throughout the community, my message to motorists
is, `Be careful out there,"' Reinhard said.
The safety message is echoed by the Eugene Police Department, which uses both
education and enforcement to encourage people to drive safely. An example of an educational
effort was the June 1999 campaign against red-light running, which helped raise awareness about
the dangers of failing to obey traffic signals. On the enforcement side, police have been active in
ticketing violators, particularly around intersections with higher collision rates and in response to
neighborhood traffic safety complaints.
The following is a summary of the "top ten" list of intersections with the highest numbers
of accidents:
City of Eugene - 1999 High Accident Locations Number of
Rank Intersection Accidents
1 7TH AVE & WASHINGTON ST 42
2 7TH AVE & JEFFERSON ST 41
3 11TH AVE & BAILEY HILL RD 22
4 RIVER RD & BELTLINE RAMPS 21
5 PACIFIC US 99W & ROOSEVELT BLVD 21
6 CENTENNIAL BLVD & COBURG RD 20
7 RIVER AVE /SILVER LN & RIVER RD 19
8 6TH AVE & CHAMBERS ST 18
9 7TH AVE & CHAMBERS ST 17
# # #

~I
