Public Works
Maintenance and
Parks & Open Space Divisions
MEMORANDUM
Date:. February 11, 2009
To: Maintenance Division Employees
Parks & Open Space Employees
From: Jeff Lankston, Maintenance Director.
Johnny Medlin, Parks & Open Space Director
Subject: Workplace Behavior.Expectations
City of Eugene
1820 Roosevelt Blvd.
Eugene, Oregon 97402
(541) 6824800
(541) 682 -4882 FAX
www.eugene- or.gov
One of the top ten motivating factors to recruiting, hiring, and keeping employees is creating a work environment
that is open, respectful, trusting, and fun. Each and every one of you is responsible for creating a supportive and
respectful environmental for all of us. While we encourage you to enjoy your work and each other, we need to
do so in a way that is understanding and sensitive to the perspective of others. We must all think about what we
say and do, and refrain from making any comments or taking any action that may be derogatory or demeaning.
Any comments, jokes, printed materials, or actions that reference or generalize someone's background, gender,
religion,.physical characteristics, sexual orientation, or other inherent qualities may be offensive to your co-
workers, customers, or the public and should be avoided, even if it appears that the person does not object.
Your behavior and comments have an impact on comfort at the.workplace, enjoyment of work, productivity, and
success on the job of other individuals. Treating people with dignity and respect goes beyond a legal and policy
issue; it is a clear value of the organization. Each of us must be accountable. for our behavior. It is our
expectation that we all take some responsibility for more than our own behavior, but also stand up for others. If
you hear or see something happen that you think -may be offensive or hurtful to someone or that you are
uncomfortable with, please bring it to the attention of the person who said or.did'it, or to, your supervisor, section
manager, or division manager. Our work environment will only improve if we each take accountability for our
own behavior and also, to some degree, the behavior of our co- workers.
We realize that it is difficult for all of us to comfortably discuss some issues and to always perceive the impact of
our actions on others. However, we believe if we can be open, accepting, and understanding of each other and
learn to talk about these issues, we will all benefit.
The City provides various trainings around harassment, workplace violence and dealing with conflict that will
help you understand our policies and standards and give you some tools to deal with a situation, should you
encounter one.
The City of Eugene anti - harassment policy, which each of you received at your initial hire is taken very seriously.
Any behavior in the workplace that violates this policy will not be tolerated. Any violation of this policy is subject
to the appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including termination. If you have any questions about what is
expected of you or what is appropriate, you are strongly encouraged to talk with your supervisor, section
manager, or division manager.
Pmr-s-Amp Perna 1 of 1 n0rjimFnf Nn :14d
