November 3, 2011

CONTACT:
Eric Johnson, Surface Operations Manager, 541-682-4904

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Annual Leaf Collection and Delivery Service Begins Monday in Eugene

Fall has arrived, and it’s time to ask the annual question: what to do with all those leaves?
Keeping leaves out of catch basins prevents flooding and protects the water quality in local
streams – two of the main objectives of the stormwater-funded leaf collection and delivery
program.
One option is to place leaves in the street to be picked up by Eugene Public Works crews.
But more and more people are finding that leaves are a valuable natural resource, particularly
when they’re recycled as mulch or compost material. In fact, of the almost 16,000 cubic yards of
leaves that Public Works picked up last year, 65 percent were delivered to local residents – an all-
time high! The rest were used in community gardens and parks. None of the leaves collected by
the City wound up in the landfill.
It’s easy to request leaf deliveries. Go to www.eugene-or.gov/leaf and use the handy
online form, or call Public Works Maintenance at 541-682-4800.
If you have more leaves than you can use on your property or dispose of in your yard
debris container, leaf collection service starts Monday, Nov. 7, in west and central Eugene. Crews
work their way around the city during November and December, then make a second round of
collections starting in late December. Leaves on unimproved streets are picked up only during the
second round of collections.
If you’re planning to put leaves out for collection, please following these important
guidelines:
When piling leaves in the street, don’t place leaves in bike lanes. Leaves piled in bike
lanes can force cyclists to swerve into traffic lanes or lose control of their bicycles. Remember,
property owners are responsible and bear the liability for leaves that are placed improperly in the
street or cause safety or flooding hazards.

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
