The following is our understanding
of the scope of work for the vault covers that the City requires at this time.
Project Understanding
The City is nearing 60-percent plans for the overlay of runway 16L/34R. The overlay will require the
adjustment of approximately 50 vaults/manhole covers that can be generally grouped in five (5)
types as follows:
Location Type
Vault
Cover and Frame
Number
Runway Shoulder 1
24"
pipe barrel
12" diameter - Solid
28
li
Taxiway
24"'
pipe barren
12" diameter - Solid
2
_
Runway Shoulder 111
24"
pipe barrel
24" diameter - Solid
16
Taxiway VI
48"
pipe barrel
24" diameter - Solid
2
Runway Shoulder V
24"
pipe barrel
24" diameter - Slotted
2
The vault/manhole covers consist of two elements: the frame and cover, and a surrounding. Integral
structural concrete ring slab to lower bearing pressure under the cover to allowable limits for aircraft
loading.
Design Criteria - The covers and frames are cast iron and all have a proof load of 200,000 pounds,
and cut sheets have been provided by the City. The structural concrete ring slabs located in the
runway shoulders will rarely see the design aircraft loading, and will be designed for overload stress
levels for occasional aircraft loading that will ensure no failure. The shoulder paving is also similarly
designed for reduced loading. The vault cover structural concrete ring slabs in the active taxiways will
be designed for standard design stress for continuous aircraft loading. Design of the thickness of the
vault covers will be governed by punching shear of the cover and frame through the structural concrete
ring slab, bending from aircraft wheel loads, and allowable bearing pressure under the slab.
EUGENE - Corporate Office
541.683.5090
Fax: 541.683.6576
920 Country Club Road, Suite 100B
Eugene, Oregon 97401-6089
PORTLAND AREA
503.620.6103
Fax: 503.620.8416
5005 SW Meadows Road, Suite 120
Lake Oswego, Oregon 97035-4288
SALEM
503.589.4100
Fax: 503.589.4141
2235 Mission Street SE, Suite 100
Salem, Oregon 97302-1295
MEDFORD
641.774.5590
Fax: 541.774.5591
831 O'Hare Parkway
Medford, Oregon 97504-4005
www.obec.com
