Other
-~-.Fire
The graph above shows total calls for fire & EMS response per year, beginning in 1981, which
was when the department began providing emergency medical transport services. Due primar-
ily to rising medical service demand, the call total exceeded 20,000 for the first time in FY07.
Calls for fire response have remained relatively stable over the years, as improved construction
techniques and materials - as well as aggressive fire prevention programs -have offset
steady growth in population, number of structures protected, and other overall community risk
factors.
The continuing rise in medical service demand, however, is a concern. Reductions in Medicare
reimbursement rates, a rising median age of the popuiation, and reduced support for social ser-
viceshave combined to threaten the long-term financial stability of the department's ambulance
service, which is required by City Council policy to beself-supporting. Addressing this issue is
a key department priority in FY08.
(NOTE: Prior to FY04, the department's computerized Fire Incident Reporting System did not capture ambulance-only responses.
The Total-call and Medical-call figures given above for FY04 and beyond include these responses.)
Pa~tne~ships and Affilaa~i'ons
Eugene Fire & EMS is grateful to the many public, private, and non-profit agen-
ciesthat have extended the hand of partnership to us in order to help keep our
community safe.
