_~
Section 3
Airport catchment area, activity, and use
__~
Airport use by community
~~ Airport use can be further defined by community to better understand where travelers from the
;, communities in the Eugene Airport catchment area access commercial air service. All of the communities
in the catchment area are closer to Eugene Airport than Portland International Airport. As MIDT booking
'~' information is reported by travel agency location, this analysis assumes that the traveler resides in the
,.~ same community as the travel agency where the ticket was booked. Table 3.8 shows retention by
community. Retention rates from the 2004 Passenger Demand Analysis by community are provided for
E~ comparison.
Albany, Corvallis, and Newport have an unusually high diversion to Portland International Airport. These
communities, although located closer to Eugene Airport than Portland International Airport, are on the
northern edge of the catchment area. The drive time to Portland International Airport is relatively shorter
than from interior catchment area communities, so service and fare considerations may weigh more
heavily on the minds of travelers from outlying communities. Compared to the 2004 Passenger Demand
Ana/ysis, retention for Eugene Airport increased in every community ranging from 0.3 points in Albany to
7.8 points in Junction City.
Table 3.8 Airport use by community
Communit
Y
Current survey w _,. w
Prior year analysis ~.,~..~~._.~,~.wr..._
Difference
Eugene Portland
~
_ Eugene Portland in retention
Pax °;<, Pax % _ %_ o
/o wow;.... ~,,~,,,.,~,~~
/o
a~~Y 237 7.2 3.071 " 92.8 ~ 6.9 93.1 ~~ A Q~
Corvallis 2.463 15.7 13,23(1 84.3- ~ 14.7;. . 85.3 - ~_ ,~~~~ 1
C
Cottage Grave 1,297 62.=1 7130 37.6 58.4 41.6 .
~,,,~.,~~.~ 4
1
EugeneiSpringfield ~ ~- ~ ,
~7.J85
71.7
11,049"
28.3 ~~
66.7
33.3 .
~•-~~~°°--~
5.0
Florence 851 66.2 435 33.8 ~ 62.0 38.0 " ~~ 4
2
Junction City 2,315 77.8 659 22.2 ~ 70.0 30.0 .
"~~~ ~~ 7.8
Newport 285 11.5 2,184 88.5 ~ 10.7
~ ~ " _ 89.3 ! ~ ~~~ 0.8
Roseburc
_J ~ ~
2.04 ~
X0.8
1,983
492:
46.9:
53.1 . ,~,w,w.,~.„_,,~.,„...,~~,
3
9
Total/Average 37,478 52.9 33,391 " 47.1 " 50.3 49.7" .
2
6
Source: MIDT survey data -calendar year 2004 ""` ""' ` .
""" °"'~°°"~°w~~~°°~
`.
