_~
--~ Section 3
Airport catchment area, activity, and use
Eugene Airport weekly departures and available seats
The quality of air service offered by an airport is a factor in an air traveler's decision process when
choosing an origination airport. In general, passengers prefer larger aircraft over smaller aircraft and jet
aircraft over turboprop aircraft. Table 3.2 provides a summary of departures and Table 3.3 provides
information on available seats by aircraft and airline for the week of December 6, 2004, for Eugene
Airport. Jet versus turboprop service is separated to review the quality of the service provided.
United Airlines was the primary provider of air service to/from Eugene Airport. During the sample week of
December 6, 2004, United Airlines offered 95 departures (45.9 percent) from Eugene Airport. United
Airlines provided Portland service with Embraer 120 Brasilia aircraft and used the Canadair Regional Jet
for service east to Denver and south to San Francisco. Compared to the sample week used in the 2004
Passenger Demand Analysis (week of December 15, 2003), United Airlines added five flights per week to
San Francisco and removed two flights per week to Portland. Horizon Air offered 81 weekly departures,
39.1 percent of the total departures from Eugene Airport, which represents a decrease in frequency of
three flights (one to Los Angeles, two to Portland) from December 2003. Horizon Air used the de
__ ~ Havilland Dash 8 200 for service to Portland and Seattle. Canadair Regional Jets were used for service
' to Medford and Los Angeles. America West Airlines provided 17 scheduled departures. Currently,
~ Horizon Air operates the de Havilland Dash 8 Q400 for service to Los Angeles (executed January 7,
2005). Since this change in service occurred after the survey period, the effects of changing from
~ regional jet equipment to turboprop equipment on this route are not yet known. America West Airlines
~ used the Canadair Regional Jet aircraft for service to Phoenix and Las Vegas. In comparison to
December 2003, America West Airlines had one less departure to Las Vegas. Delta Air Lines (code-
_~ share with SkyWest Airlines) introduced service in May 2004 to Salt Lake City. The twice daily service is
operated with the Canadair Regional Jet. Overall, Eugene Airport's total departures increased by 15 over
t
the December 15, 2003, sample week, an increase of 7.8 percent.
`""" Table 3.2 Eugene Airport weekly departures

~ ~ Aircraft t e
Yp Weekl de art
Y p ures ~~ ~
I ~...~.~.~.,.__~~.....~"~
.Jet ; Turbo-
UA QX MP DL Total ~
~ i proms
~

~ ~ Canadair Regional Jet 200 49 0 10~
~ ~ 14 73
~ 3
~
~ 0
.~.~
Canadair Regional Jet 700 1~} 20
0 0~ 34 ~
41 ~
0
-~ Canadair Regional Jet 900 0 0 7 0 7 7f 0
~
~ de Havilland Dash 8 200 0 61; ~ 0~ 0 ~ 61 U~ ~ _
~61
Er7~braer 120 Brasilia 32~ 0 0 0 32 ~ 32
Total 95 81. 17
~ 14 207 114 93

~ of total 45.9 ; 39.1 ~ ~ 8.2 6.8. 100 0 55 1
~~~~~ M~. _
44.9
~~~.~
Source: Official Airline Guitle -w eek of D ecember 6, 2004
Table 3.3 gives a detailed view of the number of seats available per week by airline and aircraft for the
sample week of December 6, 2004, for Eugene Airport. United Airlines offered the greatest number of
available seats with 4,390 (44.6 percent) of the weekly available seats. Horizon Air offered 3,657 (37.1
percent) of the weekly available seats. America West Airlines offered 1,102 (11.2 percent) of the weekly
available seats, and Delta Air Lines offered 700 (7.1 percent) of the weekly available seats. Overall,
9,849 seats were available during the sample week of December 6, 2004, with 67.3 percent on jet
aircraft. Compared to the sample week of December 15, 2003, used in the 2004 Passenger Demand
Analysis, Eugene Airport gained 1,349 available seats, an increase of 15.9 percent.
T?UGENF,
A t.T~PURT
Page 7
