Page 46
The Equipment Maintenance staff works a five
day, 40-hour week, Monday through Friday, start-
ing at 7:45 a.m. and ending at 4:15 p.m. All
employees are on a rotating schedule for after-hour
emergencies.
The emergency call-out system uses a rotating card
file. Employees' cards are labeled according to their
^ FACILITIES
Equipment Maintenance personnel work in a large
maintenance building, which includes a 4,200-
square-foot high bay, instrument and electrical
shops, a paint room, a workroom, a conference
room, an employee lunchroom, and four offices for
the Equipment and Facilities Maintenance super-
visors and the lead workers. The storeroom is also
a part of the Maintenance building, allowing con-
venient access for maintenance personnel -the
storeroom's most frequent customers. In addition,
a vehicle service garage, a steamcleaningbuilding,
and an oil storage building provide work and stor-
age areas for specialized needs.
The high bay has afour-ton capacity bridge crane
to lift and maneuver the heavy equipment that
comes in for repairs. The high bay area also houses
specialized tools and machine shop equipment.
The northeast corner of the area houses the weld-
ing and metal fabrication work areas. The north
andwestwalls are divided into sevenwork stations
that provide tool storage areas for the general
maintenance technicians.
The instrument shop has a separate work area for
the instrument technicians, where a variety of
testing and calibration equipment, metering de-
vices, and special tools are used and maintained.
The electrical shop is designed and equipped to
meet the special needs of the maintenance electri-
cians.
The paint room is used exclusively for painting and
coating activities and is shared with the Facility
^ EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS
Section F: EQuir~vz Mnnvz~v~uvcB
area of maintenance responsibility. During an emer-
gency, the employee whose card is at the front of
the file is called. If he or she cannot be reached, the
next employee in the file is called. The card of the
employee who handles the emergency is then
placed at the back of the file. This system equitably
distributes emergency call-outs and overtime.
Maintenance staff. The room was specifically de-
signed for painting and is equipped with a fume
hood; an overhead sprinkler system; flammable
liquid storage cabinets; and hazardous waste stor-
age for waste paint, thinners, and spent solvent.
A recent expansion of the Maintenance building
included the addition of an employee lunchroom
and a workroom for Maintenance personnel. The
workroom houses a plant process computer work
station, amini-computer terminal, and associated
printers and copiers. The new lunchroom will be
used by both the Equipment Maintenance and
Facilities Maintenance employees.
Maintenance and repair of all Wastewater Divi-
sion vehicles and heavy equipment occur in the
vehicle service garage. The garage mechanic also
manages the fueling station, which consists of
pumps and two underground tanks for storing
gasoline and diesel fuel.
Before the on-site service garage was constructed
and the vehicle mechanic hired, all vehicle and
heavy equipment maintenance was done off-site
by Public Works Maintenance staff. The availabil-
ity of an on-site garage and mechanic has resulted
insignificant service and resource improvements.
The steam cleaning building consists of three open
bays and is shared by Facilities Maintenance and
Equipment Maintenance staff. Only one bay is
actually used for steam cleaning operations; the
other two are storage areas for equipment and
materials. An oil storage building houses all equip-
mentoils and lubricants.
` The maintenance technicians use a variety of brazing, or metal cutting operation, using MIG and
I ! equipmentandspecializedtools.Themaintenance TIG wire welders, electrical stick welders, arc
shop can perform almost any type of welding, metal cutters, metal cut-off saws, and pipe thread-
