PATTERSON STREET UNDERPASS -ESTIMATE OF PROBABLE CONSTRUCTION COSTS
' EWEB Site
This cost estimate assumes that the steam plant and substation adjacent to the proposed
Waterfront Drive construction will have been removed when the Patterson Underpass is
constructed. It is assumed that any utilities in this area will be relocated or abandoned by
~;
EWEB as part of the EWEB relocation to a new site.
Structures
Hwy. 99W Undercrossing
Patterson Street roadway will have an overall width of 40 feet with 2 -12 ft. lanes and 2 - 8
'- ' ft. sidewalks. Vertical abutments will be used creating a 40-ft. clear span. The overall span
length of bridge will be 44 ft. Vertical clearance will be 14 ft. per City concept plan.
The bridge width will be 48 ft. overall with 1 - 6 ft sidewalk, 2 -14 ft. lanes, l -12 ft.
bike/pedestrian path with 2 -1 ft concrete parapet bridge rails. Reinforced concrete impact
panels, 20-ft section at each approach will be used.
The structure will be constructed of prestressed precast concrete slabs with asphalt concrete
~; wearing surface.
UPRR Undercrossing
Patterson Street roadway will have an overall width of 40 feet with 2 -12 ft. lanes and 2 - 8
ft. sidewalks. Vertical abutments will be used creating a 40-ft. clear span. The overall span
length of bridge will be 48 ft. Vertical clearance will be 14 ft. per City concept plan.
The structure type will be a steel thru-girder to minimize superstructure depth below track
and minimize cut for the roadway section.
The bridge width will be 19.75 ft. between centerlines of the steel thru-girders.
Steel thru-girders are proposed to minimize superstructure depth and are used with
- -; concurrence of the City. The superstructure depth will be 4.5 ft from top of track to bottom
of bridge girders. The structure will carry one track.
A shoofly will be constructed to maintain rail traffic throughout the construction of the new
crossing. Temporary shoring between the main-line and shoofly will be required.
Railroad
A shoofly, which will be required by UPRR, is not included in the structure cost. UPRR
provided an estimate for the shoofly that will be a minimum of one quarter of a mile to one
half of a mile long on each side of the crossing to maintain rail traffic at normal speed. UPRR
will insist that construction of the bridge not impact rail operations.
Horizontal and vertical profile grade of track will remain in their current configuration.
.! Raising the existing track to minimize roadway excavation was considered but rejected by
UPRR due to physical constraints at the viaduct to the northwest and proximity with the
existing 8+~ Avenue/EWES crossing. This matter should be pursued with the UPRR/Public
'' Utilities Commission and possibly others as time permits.
PDX/PATTERSON STREET UNDERPASS TECH MEMO 062504 PAGE 4 OF 6
