3. Public Process

A series of three workshops were held over nine months to provide information, collect
input, and gage support for proposed alternatives. The interest shown in the planning
process was very strong as evidenced by the number of individuals attending
workshops and the volume of input submitted to staff.
Each workshop was well publicized. In addition to an interested parties list which grew
with each meeting, over 4,000 postcard invitations were mailed to park neighbors. for
each meeting, ads were placed in the Register Guard and Eugene Weekly, and posters
were displayed throughout the park.
Workshop #1
Approximately 60 community members attended the first workshop, held on September
25, 2003, at the Hilyard Community Center. The goal and objectives of the public
process were outlined as follows:
Goal: Conduct an efficient, inclusive and open discussion regarding Amazon Park
which helps direct near-term improvements and provides direction for the future.
Objective 1: Identify priority
improvements to help determine how to
spend the available bond measure funds.
• Objective 2: Identify what aspects of the
existing Master Plan remain relevant
while updating and recording new trends
in public opinion and expertise. Amend
the existing Master Plan as needed.
Staff provided a description of existing park
conditions and current thinking regarding
the bond measure funds, parking, and
natural resources. A large group discussion
of general park issues concluded with a
prioritization exercise. See the Workshop #1
Report in the appendix for a complete summary of
the meeting and results from a questionnaire
distributed at the workshop.
Amazon Park Concept Design Page 8 February 15, 2005
Workshop #1 prioritization exercise.
