It was subsequently determined that lighted ballfields would not be appropriate on
natural turf in this location. The heavy clay soils of Amazon Park, could simply not
sustain the amount of play which would result from having lighted fields. The bond
measure recommendation was modified to include the two ballfields, but eliminate the
field lighting and paved parking.
Staff initiated a project scoping process to flush out issues related to the maintenance,
management and enhancement of Amazon Park. This process involved meeting with
Recreation, Transportation, and Park Maintenance staff to understand internal program
needs. Additionally, as with all bond measure planning projects, a public process was
conducted to inform residents of the available funding and to collect citizen input on the
proposed projects. This process is further described in Chapter 3.
Maintaining Infrastructure
A backlog of maintenance-related projects was also
rising to the surface in the late 1990's. The foundation
and surfacing of the tennis courts had become so
cracked, that resurfacing companies would no longer
guarantee their work. An overlay surface called "sport
court" was researched and determined to provide a
long lasting surface treatment at an efficient .price.
This surfacing also accommodates other sports besides
tennis, such as roller hockey, in-line skating, and street
hockey. This new surfacing product was purchased in
2003, and provides an opportunity for the growing
sport of in-line hockey with the installation of dasher
boards at certain times of year.
Sport Court, multi-use court surfacing.
The field complex north of 24~ Avenue was also in disrepair. The restroom was
suffering structural as well as functional deficiencies, the lights for the two ballfields
were problematic to maintain and did not comply with current lighting standards, and
the volleyball courts were neglected and vandalized on a regular basis. The restroom
was rebuilt in the winter of 2003-2004 with an additional area added for recreation
storage. The field lights were replaced and new volleyball courts constructed in a more
visible location. These updates have dramatically improved the appearance and
functionality of this part of the park.
Amazon Park Concept Design Page 6 February 15, 2005
