2. Pro,~ect Background
History
Amazon Park was initially acquired in 1947 through the Century Progress Fund.
Additional parcels were acquired and added to the park through the 1940's.
Development of recreation improvements began in the 1950's with construction of a
ballfield and the swimming pool opening. The creek was dramatically modified by the
Army Corp of Engineers in 1958 when it was enlarged, straightened, and partially lined
with concrete.
The 1960's and 1970's saw additional recreation development with the playground,
tennis courts, Amazon Community Center, bike path, and running trail being
constructed. In 1974, Amazon Parkway was extended between 24th and 30th Avenue. In
the late 1980's the playground was remodeled, the Hilyard Community Center was
opened and the softball/soccer field was constructed south of 24th. In the 1990's the
skatepark was constructed (one of the first of its kind) and the dog park was installed.
1994 Plan
In 1994 a master plan process was undertaken to guide future development and identify
areas for preservation. The 1994 park master plan was created through a formal public
process. The resulting plan helped to guide decision making in the park for nearly a
decade. It was shortly after then that the LTD park and ride station and parking lot was
constructed.
I
~ ,~p~Ar
~tb ~ 2 ~ ~ ~ _ - ~ 1 ~ ~~' ;x'14 ~
'e ~~ ~~- ~. ,~ _~
Amazon Park master plan, 1994.
1998 Bond Measure
In 1998, Eugene voters approved a 25.3 million dollar Parks and Open Space bond.
measure which secured funding for improvements to Amazon Park. The Bond Measure
Advisory Committee formulated the following recommendation for Amazon Park," 2-
lighted ballfields with parking." This recommendation was only partially consistent
with the 1994 master plan, which designated an area for two ballfields, but did not
identify additional paved parking.
Amazon Park Concept Design Page 5 ~ February 15, 2005
