A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER
At the City of Eugene, we strive to continually improve our service to the
community and to establish a lasting legacy of success. After a year of hard work
and good progress, we have many reasons to be excited about 2008:
Service and Budget Realignment Process
A new City Council-approved Service and Budget Realignment Process will help us
maximize limited resources and ensure the focus stays on the community's and the
council's highest priorities.
Downtown Development
In Eugene, we have so much-fine educational institutions, thriving arts and cultural activities, diverse
recreational opportunities, and picturesque natural surroundings. Downtown workers can walk out of their
offices and, within minutes, be strolling along a beautiful river. However, our downtown needs more of the
vision and determination that brought us the Hult Center for the Performing Arts and our new public library.
We will continue to work toward creating a downtown the community will support with pride.
Collaboration
Through partnerships with numerous private and public organizations, the City is able to look at issues more
comprehensively and continue exceptional service delivery in spite of diminished resources. Our work with
Lane County and the Ciry of Springfield enables us to effectively address issues-such as road repairs-that
are too complex to manage on our own. This collaboration, as well as our partnerships with the Olympic
Trials Steering Committee, University of Oregon, and other community organizations, has helped establish a
successful planning model for future endeavors.
Sustainability
Whether or not you believe that global warming is the result of human irresponsibility, we can all agree that
the earth needs better care. We can no longer take our beautiful environment for granted. We must weave
sustainability practices into every aspect of our lives, and help protect our most vulnerable populations. We
may not be able to save the world; but, by simply developing a few new habits, we can set a good example
and make a difference. To quote renowned anthropologist Margaret Mead, "Never doubt that a small group
of thoughtful people can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
Track Town USA!
Eugene 08~very visitor and community member with or without a ticket can be involved. The Eugene 08
Festival will feature a jumbo video screen with simulcasts of Olympic Trials competition, interactive exhibits,
live enitertainment, afood court and much more. Among the many benefits this event brings to our area are
major beautification efforts, a resurgence of track and field, increased dollars for local businesses, and an
emphasis on a healthy lifestyle. The whole world will be watching as Eugene hosts Eugene 08, the 2009 and
2011 U.S. Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and the 2012 Olympic Track & Field Trials. Eugene-the
Challenging the way we live means .. .
The regional wastewater treatment plant
generates more than 1/2 of the electricity
needed to run the plant by recovering and
bw ring the methane gas it produces. This
has offset almost 2,500 metric tons of
C02 emissions since 1999, frees up over
6,000 megawatthours per year of clean
EVVEB power for other uses, and offsets
an amount of C02 equivalent to the
' 'emissio`ns of 20 average Eugene homes
every year.
The Cin~'s "Green Team" is a
promote the use of technology
to decrease waste and increase
