CITY COUNCIL GOAL: Transportation Initiative <br />Develop mechanisms to adequately fund our transportation system for <br />cars, trucks, bikes and pedestrians including maintenance and <br />preservation and capital re-construction. <br />Contact: Kurt Corey, Executive Director, Public Works, 682-5241 <br />Roland Hoskins, Staff Lead, 682-8421 <br />Reporting period: January -March 2007 <br />At this year's City Council retreat, the council launched a new initiative on transportation, and <br />approved the following language for the goal: <br />7"ransportation Initiative.• <br />l7evelap mechanisms to adequately fund our transportation system far cars, trucks, bikes and pedestrians <br />including maintenance and preservation and capital re-construction. <br />b "' ACTION TO-DATE <br />In January 2007, the Eugene City Council agreed to form a council subcommittee, comprised of <br />four 'councilors, to study transportation funding options and to bring back a recommendation for <br />a solution or solutions meeting certain specific criteria to adequately fund the city's <br />transportation system. Working with a staff team, the council subcommittee met eight times <br />over a period of 13 weeks to study and discuss 30 potential transportation system funding <br />alternatives. A discussion of the draft subcommittee final report is scheduled to be presented at a <br />City Council work session on May 23, 2007. <br />Additionally, an interdepartmental team has been assigned to work on the new City Council Goal: <br />Transportation Funding. The city's transportation funding needs fall <br />into a number of different categories, including operations and maintenance (O&M), capital <br />pavement preservation projects (PPP), off-street bike and pedestrian path operations, maintenance <br />and preservation (OM&P), and other transportation system priority needs that have been recognized <br />by council. <br />-23- <br />
