SAFETY & LOSS CONTROL SERVICES <br />Safety & Loss Control staff continued to work with both Police management staff and EPEA representatives to <br />provide a productive. safety committee structure to address health and safety concerns. Areas of emphasis <br />were-water safety, hazard communications, safety inspections, hearing conservation, respiratory protection, <br />and consultation/support by the Safety/Loss Control Manager for a comprehensive Health & Safety <br />Compliance Inspection by OR-OSHA. <br />OSHA Recordable Illness/Injury <br />The graph on the right shows a four year history of Police <br />worker's compensation claims and the number that were eo <br />classified as OSHA Recordable Injuries. Police ~o <br />employees recorded a total of 32 OSHA-recordable ~ <br />incidents during FY07 compared to 26 reported in FY06. ~ <br />The increase in injuries stem mainly from an increase in ~ <br />dealings with combative suspects and conducting more ~ <br />Defensive Tactics Training classes to train officers how to <br />defend themselves from combative suspects. 20 <br />10 <br />DART (Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred) Rate ° <br />Oregon OSHA tracks workers' compensation claims that Froa Frog Foos FYO7 <br />result in days away from work, work restrictions or job #orv~ake~s~c«nrens~«,c~ams <br />transfers and calculates the "DART" Rate. Risk Services #of osHa,Rec«aa~~ ~r~~;es <br />staff has calculated DART rates for each department in an <br />effort to give departments a mechanism for comparing <br />their losses with previous years. The DART rates for Police and the City as a whole are shown in the chart <br />below. The DART rate for Police increased to 8.4 in FY07 compared to 6.8 in FY06 and to 6.7 in FY05 and <br />remains above the current City DART rate of <br />5.0. Days of work missed due to Time Loss <br />injuries increased from 237 days in FY06 to <br />425 days in FY07. Miles driven by Police increased slightly over the 1,615,584 miles driven in <br />FY06 and over the 1,468,584 miles driven in FY05. <br />Police had a total of 15 motor vehicle accidents in FY07 compared to 10 in FY06. <br />Of this total, 10 (67%) were classified as at-fault accidents. The two leading "` <br />causes of at-fault accidents were running into objects and collisions with other ,~ ~~ " <' <br />vehicles. Risk Services will continue to work with Police to reduce the number of .._~~___ <br />at-fault accidents that are occurring. <br />45 <br />Police Dept.
