In FY07, 52 (66%) out of the 78 claims paid were
filed by temporary/seasonal employees who were
laid off or still working. This includes seasonal
employees with Public Works Maintenance and
Parks & Open Space, temporary part-time
Recreation employees, and Cultural Services
stage crew/ushers. The
claim costs for FY07 were $823,297 which is the
second highest total in the last five fiscal years and
a 45% increase over the tthe lowest of the last five
fiscal years (FY03). This includes claims that have
been paid as well as reserves established for
future payments. (This number is expected to
change as claims continue to incur costs and as
claims close, thereby reducing the reserves.) In
FY07, 227 claims were filed which is a significant increase over last
fiscal year's total of 184.
35 of the 227 claims were disabling claims. This represents 15% of the total claims filed but accounts for 80% of
the total severity (claims cost). The total severity of the disabling claims was $660,720 which averages out to be
$18,878 per disabling claim. The total work days lost from those claims was 1,114 for an average of 32 lost days
per claim.
INJURY TYPE
FY03 ~ FY05 FY06 F 7
Burns (heat & chemical) 2 2 1 1 2
Contusions/cuts 42 45 26 31 50
Exposures`" 19 20 14 9 21
Fractures/dislocations 8 6 4 13 9
Hernia 1 1 4 0 0
Miscellaneous~`~" 26 15 29 21 34
Sprains/strains 83 88 85 105 109
Torn cartilage 4 2 6 4 2
TOTAL 185 179 169 184 227
'includes crushes, laceratio ns, abrasions, an d punctures
"includes exposures to blood, poison oak, vi ruses, etc.
`"*includes hearing trauma, angina, bites, foreign body in eye, sh ock,
umulative trauma, inflam mation, etc.
While all Departments saw increases in the
number of claims filed, Fire and Police saw
the greatest increases and, as is expected
due to the nature of the work, they continue
to have the highest number of claims filed.
Fire and Police claims accounted for 147 of
the claims filed
City-wide (65%) and $659,313 (80%) of
the total claims costs.
Claims Analysis
Sprains and strains continue to account for
a majority of the injuries sustained; 109
(48%) of the 227 claims filed were for
sprains/strains.
