Perceptions about economic opportunity in Eugene are improving, with 60% of respondents saying their
economic opportunities have improved or stayed the same during the last five years, up substantially from
last year's low of 50%.
Views on the City's role in economic development remained somewhat static from last year,, with two
notable exceptions. Eighty percent of respondents believe the City should take an active role in helping
outside companies come to Eugene, up substantially from 66% in 2003. Providing tax incentives to
businesses creating new jobs also garnered significantly more support this year, with 67% percent
supporting the practice compared to 55% last year.
Fewer people reported feeling safe walking in business areas alone after dark (63% reported feeling "very
safe" or "somewhat safe," down from 72% in 2003), though there was no significant change in
respondents' perception of safety in their own neighborhoods.
The survey report will be posted to the City's website and copies. will be available in the Eugene Public
Library.
For more information, please contact me at 682-5412 or terrie.e.monroe@ci.eugene.or.us.
